Brand direction 04 · mascot · take two

Three characters, three relationships.

The question isn't what is it — it's what is it to you. An enemy you hunt, a thing you raise, or a partner who brings you stuff. Each one changes what the whole app feels like.

WHAT CHANGED · DRAWN TO DUOLINGO'S RULES

The earlier drawings failed on craft, not concept. Pulling Duo apart shows why: the eyes are enormous — each one about 30% of the body width, together spanning three quarters of it. There are no outlines anywhere, head and body are one mass rather than two circles, the palette is three tones and highly saturated, and every eye carries one small white specular dot. That dot is most of the life. All three below are rebuilt on those rules.

Heisenthe bug
an enemy you hunt

Not a helper — an opponent. Heisen breaks your code and hides, and every bug class is a different one: a race condition, an N+1 query, a leak. You collect the ones you've learned to beat. Named for the Heisenbug: the bug that changes the moment you look at it.

UNLOCKSMonster-collecting, but the monsters are real failure modes. Catching one means you can now diagnose it.
TONESmug, fast, funny. The app gets an antagonist and therefore stakes.
RISKBug mascots go cute-ladybird fast. Has to stay genuinely annoying to be satisfying.
Bisqueunfired clay
a thing you raise

Starts as a rough grey lump with thumbprints still in it. Every concept you master fires a little more of it — it smooths, warms, takes a glaze. The mascot is the progress bar. After a year you have a finished object that is visibly the sum of what you learned.

UNLOCKSLong-arc progression you can see at a glance, with no number attached to it.
TONEWarm, patient, a bit funny. It is trying its best and it is made of mud.
RISKBlob territory. Only works if the material change is dramatic and the silhouette stays specific.
Picapica pica
a partner who brings you things

Magpies are among the few animals that recognise themselves in a mirror, and they famously collect what shines. Pica watches you work, finds the thing you missed, and drops it on your desk. It plugs straight into the coin system — the bird is literally where your collection comes from.

UNLOCKSA giver, not a nag. Hints, found coins and streak-free returns all become "Pica brought you something".
TONEClever, opportunistic, a little cheeky. Never sad, never disappointed in you.
RISKIt is a bird, and Duolingo owns birds. Has to be black, sharp and long-tailed enough to never read as Duo.

How to pick

Not on which drawing you like most — any of the three can be drawn better. Pick on the relationship, because that decides the copy, the notifications, the reward moment and what the app feels like at 11pm when someone is stuck.

IF YOU PICK HEISEN

The app becomes a hunt. Lessons are briefings, failures are the enemy showing up, mastery is a captured specimen. Highest ceiling for engagement, and the one most likely to feel juvenile if the writing slips.

IF YOU PICK BISQUE

The app becomes a craft. Quiet, cumulative, no antagonist. Best long-arc retention, weakest week-one hook — nothing happens fast enough to show a friend.

IF YOU PICK PICA

The app becomes a partnership. Warmest and the easiest to write for, and it is the only one that already has a job in the coin system you liked. Safest, least distinctive.
